From behavioral diagnosis to an effective pharmacological protocol

Aggression during a veterinary visit is not a uniform problem, so there is no single universal pharmacological protocol suitable for every patient.

The choice of medications should primarily depend on the purpose of the visit and the procedures to be performed. A patient coming for a short, painless examination requires different preparation than an animal that needs blood collection, an ultrasound examination, a painful procedure, or preparation for general anesthesia.

The expected duration of drug action, the possibility of administration, and the degree to which the patient allows safe handling are also important. The protocol will differ if the owner can administer the drugs at home, if only an injection in the clinic is possible, and even more so if the animal does not allow any direct contact. Dogs and cats, as well as patients with co-existing diseases, require a separate approach.

During the webinar, we will discuss how to select pharmacotherapy based on:

• behavioral diagnosis and causes of aggression,
• species and individual characteristics of the patient,
• type of planned examination or procedure,
• anticipated painfulness of the procedure,
• duration for which drug action is needed,
• possibility of administering preparations at home or in the clinic,
• clinical status and co-existing diseases,
• risk of drug interference with laboratory test results.
  

We will pay particular attention to preparing patients for blood collection and how individual drug groups can affect measured parameters. We will also discuss the differences between protocols used before clinical examination, ultrasound, painless procedures, procedures that may cause pain, and procedures requiring further sedation or anesthesia.
