EMERGENCY MEDICINE WEBINAR SERIES

The Thorax

How to integrate lung, pleural, and mediastinal ultrasound with basic heart assessment to answer specific clinical questions in acute patients

Live Webinar #1

We invite you to participate in the new EmergencyCases+ webinar series, dedicated to analyzing difficult and complex clinical cases from emergency veterinary medicine for dogs and cats.

These will not be standard lectures. EmergencyCases+ are interactive sessions based on real-life cases straight from the presenter's daily clinical practice. Together, step by step, we will walk through each case – from initial symptoms and clinical examination, through subsequent diagnostic stages, all the way to diagnosis and decisions regarding further management.

We will consider what information is crucial at each stage, what questions to ask, what to look for during examination, and how subsequent results change our approach to the patient. There will be no shortage of difficult decisions, non-obvious images, and situations that require thinking outside the box.

An essential element of every case will be ultrasonography – one of the most accessible, non-invasive, and versatile diagnostic tools, which is also applicable in emergency situations. When used correctly, an ultrasound exam can provide critical information for assessing a patient's condition and making further decisions in a short time.

That is why, in EmergencyCases+, we will not focus solely on what is visible in the ultrasound image, but primarily on how to think about the patient and how to use the information obtained in clinical practice.

Each case will be a collaborative diagnostic process, during which we will work with the presenter to answer the questions: What do we know? What else do we need to find out? What do we see in the exam? How do we interpret this information? And what do we do next?

Presenter: Anna Świerk, DVM

Webinar start (live): October 20, 2026, 7:00 PM

The series has been designed with an emphasis on:

✔ Analyzing real clinical cases of emergencies in dogs and cats

✔ Utilizing ultrasonography as a rapid and non-invasive diagnostic tool in emergency situations

✔ A practical approach to interpreting ultrasound images in the context of symptoms and physical exam

✔ Clinical reasoning – combining data from physical examination, ultrasonography, and cardiology in the decision-making process

✔ Identifying major life-threatening conditions and determining diagnostic priorities

✔ Practical ultrasound "tips & tricks" that can be applied in the clinic the very next day

The series will be led by Anna Świerk, DVM, an experienced ultrasonographer and cardiologist who has been associated with one of the largest 24/7 veterinary facilities in Poland for over 10 years. Her daily practice includes diagnosing patients arriving at the clinic in emergency states, ensuring that the presented cases are grounded in the realities of a veterinarian's everyday work.

Throughout the series, Anna Świerk, DVM, will join participants in analyzing demanding and non-obvious clinical cases from emergencies, sourced directly from her own clinical practice.

We will walk through each case step by step – from patient presentation, symptoms, and clinical exam, through subsequent diagnostic steps and interpretation of ultrasound images, to diagnosis and decisions regarding further management.

Each webinar will be interactive – participants will be able to ask questions, share their own observations, and analyze available information together with the presenter. The goal is not just to learn the correct diagnosis, but to understand the clinical reasoning process that leads to it.

The following topics will be covered during the webinar:

✔ Lung and pleural ultrasound – rapid assessment of the most common abnormalities in a patient with dyspnea

✔ Basic heart assessment in emergencies – the most important information we can obtain without a full echocardiographic exam

✔ Mediastinal assessment – what we can see and when it is clinically relevant

✔ Integrating ultrasound findings with clinical symptoms – how to interpret results in the context of a specific patient
